Hello there!
My name is Craig Johnson and I am a performer, musician and puppeteer based in Penzance, Cornwall. Under the name Squashbox Theatre I create marvellous, quirky and inventive shows incorporating puppetry, storytelling, natural history, live music and comedy.

Since starting Squashbox Theatre in 2007 I have created nine shows:
The Sea Show (2007), Skillywidden (2008), Universarama! (2010), Stones And Bones (2011), Curious Creatures (2013), The Christmassy Christmas Show (2014), Tales from the Trees (2016), Myths and Monsters (2018) and Shivers and Shadows (2019).
I have performed these shows at theatres, arts centres, schools, village halls, festivals and events from Cornwall to Kendal and from Exeter to Essex, including ten sell-out summer seasons at the famous Minack Theatre near Land’s End.

Music has always been central to Squashbox shows, and over the years I have accumulated a collection of songs and tunes, both self-written and traditional. Most tracks on this album are from my first five shows, some are traditional tunes that I like, and a couple are songs that never quite made it into a show but are worth hearing (I think).

Most of these songs have been composed on the melodeon / diatonic accordion / squeezebox (it has many names), which I have been playing for nearly 30 years. I adore this bizarre instrument: I love its quirky, ancient-looking mechanical strangeness, with bellows, buttons and levers…I love that it can play melody, accompaniment and rhythm section, so making the player a self-contained one-man band… but most of all I love its sound: sweet and delicate, plaintive and yearning, or rich, full and brassy depending on your mood… *sigh*

However, one cannot live on squeezebox alone, so for this recording I have augmented my box with other lovely instruments – fiddle, guitar, mandolin, ukulele etc. – played by some of my very talented musician friends. So a big thank you to them.

And thank you for listening: I hope the music makes you tap your foot and nod your head, and the lyrics give you a bit of a chuckle.
